Director of Health & Safety

Dr. Prince Odame is a biomedical engineer, researcher, educator, and Reverend serving as Director of Health at AINAS, where he contributes to shaping the organisation’s vision for responsible and impactful applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
With a multidisciplinary background spanning agricultural engineering, biological engineering, biomedical engineering, and computer engineering, Dr. Odame brings a systems perspective to healthcare innovation. He holds a BSc in Agricultural Engineering, an MSc in Biological Engineering from the University of Georgia, USA, and a PhD in Computer Engineering from KNUST. This combination of engineering, computational, and biological expertise informs his approach to developing and evaluating technologies that respond to real healthcare challenges, particularly within resource-constrained environments.
At AINAS, Dr. Odame provides leadership across the health portfolio, helping connect research, artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, and practical healthcare needs. His interests include AI-enabled healthcare, medical technologies, digital health, responsible AI, health data, and intelligent systems for underserved populations. He is particularly passionate about solutions that can move beyond technical demonstrations to become useful, affordable, and sustainable interventions within African health systems.
His experience in maternal and child health has been central to this vision. Through his leadership of the Health Division at the DIPPER Lab, Dr. Odame has supported the development of technologies addressing critical challenges in neonatal and paediatric care, including neonatal jaundice, hypothermia, respiratory complications, and clinical assessment in low-resource settings. These experiences have reinforced his commitment to building technologies around the realities of patients, healthcare workers, and communities rather than simply adapting solutions developed for other contexts.
As an educator and mentor, Dr. Odame also works to cultivate the next generation of African innovators, researchers, and technology leaders. He lectures in biomechanics and biomaterials and supports interdisciplinary research spanning artificial intelligence, medical devices, computational modelling, Internet of Medical Things technologies, and responsible AI. His work reflects a broader commitment to developing both the technologies and the people needed to transform healthcare across the continent.
His leadership is also shaped by his Christian faith and his calling as a Reverend. He views innovation as a form of service and believes that scientific and technological advancement should be accompanied by compassion, integrity, responsibility, and a commitment to human dignity. This perspective guides his approach to AI in healthcare, particularly as increasingly powerful technologies create new opportunities as well as new ethical and social responsibilities.
At AINAS, Dr. Odame is focused on helping build a future where artificial intelligence is not simply advanced, but useful, responsible, inclusive, and relevant to Africa. Through research, partnerships, mentorship, and innovation, he seeks to contribute to healthcare systems where technology strengthens human expertise, expands access, and ultimately helps more people live healthier and more dignified lives.
